Is any single binocular or telescope good for all activities?
No. Whether you are at the theatre, watching a sporting event, birds, or nature's far off beauty you can benefit from the proper magnification and field of view. What works for one activity may not work best for another.
What do the various magnification or range numbers (Example: 8x25) mean?
The first number is the amount of magnification. The second number is the measurement (in millimeters) of the objective (front) lens. The size of the objective lens determins the size of the field of view (FOV) and the amount of light entering the lens. The more light entering the clearer the image.
What is FOV, or field of view?
Field of view is a measurement of the width of the field being viewed. It is generally expressed as "x feet at 1,000 yards" (Example: 315' @1,000 yards).
How do binoculars provide the magnification of the object being viewed?
By use of prisms built into each chamber of the binocular.
Are there different types of Prisms and, if so, what are the differences?
Prisms are either "porro" prisms or "roof" prisms.
Porro prisms are the more traditional prisms and are used in binoculars which are wider (relative to length) and appear to have shoulders. Porro prisms generally afford a wider FOV. Roof prisms are used in sleeker, straight through viewing chambers, and are generally considered as the better and lighter of the two types of prisms, but are generally more expensive.
What is the advantage of "image stabilized" binoculars?
This feature counteracts hand movement by use of liquid lenses or gyroscope technology.
What are the unique features of waterproof binoculars?
Waterproof binoculars must have sealed "O" rings and nitrogen purged lenses.
